How to Reach Turona Park

Reaching Turona Park is simple. Starting from Bolsena, head south along the main road until you reach Km 108.200. Here you’ll find the park entrance, well-marked and equipped with a parking area.

Preparing for the Visit

To visit Turona Park, it’s advisable to wear comfortable clothing and hiking shoes, as the trails, although well-maintained, can be challenging in some sections. Don’t forget a water bottle and a snack, especially if you plan to spend the entire day exploring the park.

What to Expect and What to See

What to Expect and What to See Turona Park is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and historical richness. The hilly woods are characterized by a wide variety of tree and shrub species such as hornbeams, flowering ashes, privets, brooms, and many others. The park is crossed by the streams of Turona ditch and Arlena ditch, known for their picturesque waterfalls and crystal-clear waters that flow down to Lake Bolsena.

The park’s fauna is equally impressive, with the presence of rare species such as pheasants, hares, dippers, various species of frogs and crabs, eels, and some trout.

Along the slopes of the smaller hill of Capriola, a burial area has been discovered with numerous funerary artifacts, now exhibited at the Territorial Museum of Lake Bolsena. Walking along the Arlena ditch, you can admire the remains of ancient mills dating back to the 14th century, testimony to the ingenuity and daily life of the medieval communities in the area.

Hiking and Mountain Biking in Turona Park

The park is a paradise for hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts. The starting point for excursions is the area adjacent to the park’s small church. From here, a well-marked trail will take you through the woods, with a small fresh water spring and an equipped picnic area.

The main hiking attraction is the climb to the top of the main hill, a path that partly coincides with the historic Via Francigena. From the summit, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Bolsena and discover the remains of an ancient Etruscan settlement. The return is via a loop trail that runs along the Arlena ditch, offering views of the waterfalls and mill ruins along the way.

For a shorter walk, you can follow the path that climbs up on the right along the Arlena ditch to one of the ancient mills. This route, also part of the Via Francigena, is perfect for a quick immersion in the natural beauty of the park.
