About this activity

Nestled in the stunning landscape of Lake Bolsena, Monte Bisenzio is a hidden treasure of Etruria, rich in history and charm.

Where it is located and how to get there

Monte Bisenzio rises majestically on the southwestern shore of Lake Bolsena, approximately 4 km from Capodimonte, in the province of Viterbo. To reach it, follow the road from Capodimonte toward Gradoli. The mountain is easily recognizable by its distinctive shape, with steep slopes overlooking the lake.

A Thousand-Year History

The history of Monte Bisenzio dates back to ancient times. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, the site later became an important Etruscan center known as Visentium. Archaeological research has revealed that the settlement reached its peak between the 8th and 7th centuries BC, when it flourished as a commercial, artisanal, and religious hub, thanks to its strategic location on the lake.

With the arrival of the Romans, Visentium retained its importance, becoming a municipium. However, its decline began with the barbarian invasions and continued through the Middle Ages, eventually leading to the progressive abandonment of the site in favor of the nearby town of Capodimonte.

What see

Despite the passage of time erasing many traces of its glorious past, Monte Bisenzio still offers numerous points of interest for history and archaeology enthusiasts:

  • The Colombarium: On the northern slope of the mountain lies a unique rock-cut structure, a colombarium with numerous niches carved into the rock. From here, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Bisentina Island.
  • The Necropolises: Surrounding the mountain are vast Etruscan burial areas, among which the Olmo Bello and Bucacce necropolises stand out.
  • The Mithraic Temple: Along the road toward Gradoli, visitors can explore an ancient temple dedicated to the cult of Mithras, dating back to the 2nd century AD.
  • The Early Christian Catacomb: About 800 meters west of Bisenzio, there is a fascinating catacomb dating back to the 4th-5th century AD, a significant testimony to the earliest local Christian community.
  • The Church of Sant’Agapito: At the foot of the mountain stands this small church, the successor to the ancient cathedral of Bisenzo, which was originally dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist.

Trails and Itineraries

Monte Bisenzio offers several exploration opportunities:

  • The Panoramic Trail: A path leading from the main road to the summit of the mountain, passing through a forest of holm oaks, oaks, and chestnut trees. Along the way, hikers can spot remains of ancient Etruscan and Roman structures.
  • The Archaeological Walk: A route winding through the main archaeological areas around the mountain, passing by necropolises and key historical sites.
  • The Nature Trail: A scenic walk that allows visitors to appreciate the rich local flora and fauna, offering stunning views of Lake Bolsena.
  • The Path of Worship: An itinerary connecting the main religious sites, from the Mithraic temple to the Early Christian catacomb, passing by the Church of Sant’Agapito.

Tips for Visiting

The best time to visit Monte Bisenzio is spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and nature displays its most beautiful colors. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for walking on uneven terrain. Bring water and snacks, as there are no refreshment points in the area.
For visits to the archaeological sites, it is advisable to contact local tour guides or the Capodimonte tourist office in advance for information on opening hours and guided tour availability.

Monte Bisenzio is a place where history, nature, and spirituality merge, offering visitors a unique experience in the heart of ancient Etruria.
