About this activity

The Church of San Giovanni in Val di Lago is a hidden gem in the heart of the San Lorenzo Nuovo (VT) area, along the scenic route of the Via Francigena. Built in the second half of the 16th century, this church reflects centuries of history and art, offering visitors a unique experience.

Where It Is and How to Reach It

Located just a few kilometers from the center of San Lorenzo Nuovo, a town in the beautiful region of Tuscia Viterbese in Lazio, the Church of San Giovanni in Val di Lago is easily accessible. You can follow the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route that crosses various parts of Italy.
By car, from Viterbo, take the Strada Statale 2 Cassia heading north toward San Lorenzo Nuovo. About 5 km before reaching the town, turn left toward Lake San Lorenzo. Park your car and follow the road to the right. At one point, you will come to an intersection; turn right and take the dirt road. After about 800 meters, you will arrive at the church, which is situated in a rural area, immersed in the tranquility of the countryside.

How to Visit the Church

Due to the current conditions of deterioration, the Church of San Giovanni in Val di Lago is not always accessible. You can visit it from the outside or arrange guided tours by contacting the municipality of San Lorenzo Nuovo or local tour guides who promote the cultural heritage.

What to Expect and What to See

The church is an extraordinary example of Renaissance religious architecture, designed by the architect Pietro Tartarino. It features an octagonal plan with a deep rectangular presbytery. It is topped by a dome and adorned with elegant stucco decorations. Despite its deterioration, one can still admire the majesty of its structure and imagine the splendor of times past.
One of the most fascinating elements of the church is the main altar, decorated by the Florentine sculptor Fernando Fancelli, known for his work in the chapels of the Orvieto Cathedral. Here, Fancelli created a stucco scene of the baptism of Jesus Christ, a masterpiece of Renaissance sacred art. Unfortunately, since the early 19th century, the church has entered a period of decline. The annual feast of San Giovanni was moved to the new town, contributing to the church’s abandonment. The wooden structure of the roof was demolished in 1828 due to deterioration, and today the church stands in a state of severe decay, with its architectural features at risk.

A Heritage to Save

The Church of San Giovanni in Val di Lago is a cultural heritage of inestimable value that deserves to be preserved. Local authorities and cultural associations are engaged in restoration and enhancement initiatives, hoping to return this extraordinary piece of history to the community and visitors.
