About this activity

Located near Grotte di Castro, the Necropolis of Centocamere is one of the most fascinating sites for those eager to immerse themselves in the history and mysteries of the ancient Etruscan civilization. This extraordinary archaeological site, known for its numerous tombs dating back to the 7th century BC, offers visitors an authentic journey into the past through its complex structure and valuable evidence of daily life and funeral rituals.
A Labyrinth of History
The necropolis, named after its approximately fifty tombs connected by an intricate system of tunnels and chambers, is spread across three levels along the hillside. The oldest level is found at the base, while the more recent tombs are located at the top, showcasing a construction evolution that spans centuries of history. Among these tombs, one particularly stands out: a 16-meter-long chamber divided into five rooms, which once housed up to 19 deceased individuals, a testament to the extraordinary architectural skills of the Etruscans.
A Journey Through Customs, Traditions, and Rituals
The thematic chambers within the site vividly depict daily life, traditions, and rituals of this ancient civilization. Funerary artifacts reveal distinctions between men and women through personal belongings and ornaments, while the presence of warriors’ weapons highlights their martial traditions. Additionally, evidence related to feasting and food preservation provides a vivid glimpse into their daily life and cultural practices.
Medieval Discoveries and Reconstructions
Reconstructed tombs offer valuable insights into the social status and gender of the deceased, further enriching our understanding of Etruscan society. However, the Necropolis of Centocamere is not solely an Etruscan site—later excavations have revealed medieval modifications, including rock-cut dovecotes (“colombaie“), adding yet another layer of historical intrigue to this unique location.
Beyond Centocamere: The Necropolis of Pianezze
A short distance away, the Necropolis of Pianezze complements the archaeological experience with its chamber tombs carved into tuff, accessible through long corridors leading to atmospheric atriums. Here, researchers have identified an ancient Etruscan path used for funeral ceremonies, offering a rare opportunity to relive the solemn atmosphere of these ancient rituals.
How to Reach the Necropolis
The Necropolis of Centocamere is located along Provincial Road SP 48, less than 2 km from Grotte di Castro, in the direction of Lake Bolsena. Follow the entrance sign on the right to uncover a place that reveals the secrets of an ancient civilization. Situated southwest of the Etruscan settlement of Grotte di Castro, the necropolis stretches across the entire hillside, ready to welcome you on a timeless journey.
