About this activity

The Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Acquapendente, located along the historic Via Francigena, is an architectural gem that blends history, legend, and sacred art. According to tradition, its foundation dates back to the 10th century, when Queen Matilda of Westphalia, mother of Emperor Otto I, stopped in Acquapendente during a pilgrimage to Rome. Here, her mules, laden with gold destined for the construction of a church, refused to move forward. That same night, a dream revealed to the queen the divine will to build the sanctuary right at that spot.

The original structure of the basilica was Romanesque and belonged to the Benedictine order. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous modifications: the current facade, dating back to the 18th century, was designed by Nicola Salvi, the renowned architect of the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Unfortunately, the facade was altered due to damage sustained during World War II.

Inside, the church features a Latin cross plan with three naves. The presbytery is elevated to accommodate the crypt below, a striking space supported by 24 columns that uphold cross-vaulted ceilings. The crypt houses a small shrine, considered the oldest replica in the world of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. It has long been a pilgrimage destination due to the presence of a blood-stained stone believed to originate from the tomb of Jesus.

The basilica was a key landmark for pilgrims and crusaders during the Middle Ages, thanks to its strategic location on the Via Francigena. In 1649, after the destruction of Castro, Pope Innocent X transferred the diocese to Acquapendente, elevating the church to the rank of cathedral. Subsequently, restoration and embellishment works were undertaken, including the creation of the 18th-century facade.

Regarding visiting hours, the cathedral is open:

  • Autumn-Winter: from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
  • Spring-Summer: from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Holy Masses are celebrated at the following times:

  • Saturday: 6:00 PM
  • Sunday: 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM

The Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Acquapendente is an unmissable destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in the history and spirituality of the area, offering a unique experience that blends art, faith, and tradition.
