About this activity

Martana Island, located in the southern part of Lake Bolsena, is part of the municipal territory of Marta, a picturesque town in the heart of the province of Viterbo, just 2 km away. Its strategic position makes it easily accessible from Marta and Montefiascone, being just over 1 km from the mainland near the locality of Kornos.

History and Constructions

Martana Island boasts a millennial history dating back to Roman and medieval times. According to historian Pennazzi, in 303 AD, Saint Christina, daughter of the prefect of Volsinii, was martyred on the island. In 410 AD, her remains were temporarily transported to the island to protect them from barbarian incursions.

In 535 AD, the island was the scene of the assassination of the Queen of the Goths, Amalasuntha, prisoner and victim of her cousin-husband Theodahad. This historical event has fueled numerous local legends, including one that says on days with strong northerly winds, the queen’s screams can still be heard. During the Middle Ages, the island became a refuge for the Benedictines and housed important relics, such as those of Saint Mary Magdalene.

The island was often contested between various factions, including the communes of Orvieto and Viterbo, and the Holy See. During the Avignon period, it experienced a time of serious disorder but continued to be a center of fervent religious life until the 16th century when it was abandoned by monastic orders.

Nature

Martana is a true natural paradise, characterized by a crescent-shaped conformation with an area of about 10 hectares. The northern part of the island is barren and rocky, with steep walls rising above the lake level.

The southern side of the island, facing towards Marta, is flatter and rich in vegetation, including a ferruginous mineral water spring. Here you can admire a wide variety of flora and fauna that makes the island a perfect place for nature lovers and hikers.

Currently, the island is privately owned and cannot be visited without the owners’ permission. However, it is possible to circumnavigate the island thanks to ferries departing from the ports of Capodimonte and Bolsena, allowing you to admire its natural beauty from the lake.
