The history of the Beech Forest of Mount Cimino has its roots in antiquity. Titus Livius described it as an “impenetrable” forest, capable of blocking the legions of Quintus Fabius Rullianus in the 4th century BC. This forest has been inhabited since Etruscan and Roman times, as evidenced by the archaeological remains found and preserved in the Pigorini Museum in Rome. During the Middle Ages and until the early 20th century, the beech forest was mainly used as pasture for pigs and for collecting beech nuts, a valuable food for animals. It was only at the end of the 19th century that the landscape and tourist value of the beech forest began to be recognized, attracting visitors eager to explore the woodland heritage of Tuscia.
