Orvieto

Orvieto

Located in Umbria, one of Italy’s most fascinating regions, Orvieto majestically rises on a volcanic tuff cliff, overlooking the valley of the Paglia River. This city is a gem of history, art, and culture, offering a unique and fascinating experience to anyone who visits it.

The history of Orvieto dates back to the Etruscan era, when the city was known as Velzna. Subsequently, under Roman rule, it was an important religious and political center. During the Middle Ages, Orvieto transformed into a fortified city, with a rich artistic and architectural heritage that has been preserved to this day.

The undisputed symbol of Orvieto is its Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Italy. Started in 1290, the cathedral is famous for its facade adorned with sparkling mosaics and detailed sculptures. The interior houses extraordinary frescoes, including the cycle of the Last Judgment by Luca Signorelli.

No less fascinating is the Well of Saint Patrick, a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. This well, with its double helical staircase, was built to ensure a water supply in case of siege.

Walking through the streets of Orvieto, you come across numerous historical palaces, churches, and medieval towers. The Torre del Moro, with its 17th-century clock, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.

Its cobblestone streets, artisan shops, restaurants offering local delicacies, and surrounding vineyards create an atmosphere that fascinates and enchants.
